Week in Review: BART passengers prefer vinyl seats; Deadlock in Vote to Replace Nadia Lockyer; Man Leads Newark Cops on Foot Chase

It was no contest. BART recently surveyed random passengers on on its cars. Vinyl was favored by three-fourths; wool by only a tenth. The biggest reason for preferring vinyl was that it's cleaner and more hygenic. Among those who favored wool, their chief reason was that fabric is more comfortable and doesn't get hot in warm weather. Some also said they don't like vinyl because it's slippery and synthetic.

The Alameda County Board of Supervisors deadlocked 2-2 on Tuesday, June 5 on appointing a replacement for Nadia Lockyer, raising the possibility that it might be left up to Gov. Jerry Brown to fill the vacancy. A majority of at least three of the four remaining supervisors must agree on a replacement for Lockyer by June 19. If they fail to reach an agreement, it will then be up to Gov. Jerry Brown to name someone. After a public hearing last week, two leading candidates emerged: Newark Vice Mayor Ana Apodaca and former Union City Councilman Richard Valle.

A man suspected of trying to pass a forged check at a nearby bank was arrested after he led Newark police officers on a short foot chase through the Rosemont Shopping Center on June 5.  Acting Sgt. David Lee said Newark police officers were called to Wells Fargo bank near Safeway around 3:20 p.m. The suspect fled but was quickly captured by police. The suspect sustained minor injuries during the pursuit and was briefly hospitalized, then arrested. Lee added that the suspect is in custody and will face charges.
