Week in Review: Cinedome Closes; Hundreds Gather for Sikh Vigil

More than 70 people filled an assembly room at the on Wednesday evening to voice their thoughts about NewPark Mall at a community meeting sponsored by the City of Newark. Many expressed frustration at the shift in the mall’s tenant lineup to lower-end retailers, while others complained that there aren’t many entertainment options at the mall. Safety and security were other concerns expressed.

Religious leaders at a vigil Wednesday night asked the community to take a stand against violence and hatred. About 400 people gathered at the Lake Elizabeth pavilion in Fremont at 7 p.m. in solidarity with the Sikh community, who lost six in a violent shooting in Wisconsin last weekend. Among those gathered were leaders from the Sikh, Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist and Catholic communities who called for peace, equality and religious acceptance.



A man was arrested after police responded to a domestic dispute Tuesday night and found nearly two dozen firearms in his home. The 52-year-old Newark man was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence and making terrorist threats after officers responded to Jonathan Place to a report of the man reportedly injuring a family member by striking the adult victim on the shoulder and hand with a belt. Twenty-two firearms, including semi-automatic shotguns, scoped rifles, assault rifles and handguns, were taken from the home at the time of the man’s arrest.



Local authorities are searching for three suspects who abducted a man from the Hayward BART station, robbed him and left him in Fremont late Saturday night, according to Fremont police. Police said two men and one woman pulled up in a vehicle next to the victim and asked him for his wallet. When he refused, the driver pointed a gun at him and told him to get into the car, police said. The group then traveled south, and within that time, the victim was robbed of his wallet, which contained cash, and a Sony PlayStation 3, authorities said. Click the link above for more information.
