A mother and a small child are being treated at hospitals this afternoon after being hit by a car while crossing a street in Fremont, a fire official said.

Battalion Chief Rich Dickinson said the mother was in a crosswalk at Fremont and Peralta boulevards with two children. She was pushing one child in a stroller and a 5-year-old was walking with them when they were hit, he said.

The mother was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley and the child in the stroller was taken to Children's Hospital in Oakland. Both had head injuries, he said.

The 5-year-old was not injured, Dickinson said.

The intersection remained closed as of 1 p.m. and motorists are being advised to avoid the area.
