A mother and a small child are being treated at hospitals this afternoon after being hit by a car while crossing a street in Fremont, a fire official said.

Battalion Chief Rich Dickinson said the mother was in a crosswalk at Fremont and Peralta boulevards with two children. She was pushing one child in a stroller and a 5-year-old was walking with them when they were hit, he said.

The mother was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley and the child in the stroller was taken to Children's Hospital in Oakland. Both had head injuries, he said.

The 5-year-old was not injured, Dickinson said.

The intersection remained closed as of 1 p.m. and motorists are being advised to avoid the area.

It looked bad, baby carriage partly crushed by the back bumper. The car had to be going fast bacause it destroyed a flower bed and light pole before it hit got to the curb, and the police were marking spots a half block away. The news says the kids are fine and the mother has minor injuries.

Steve Wood@I don't know where you got your info from but I heard from a Media source that the mother may not make it. I don't consider that minor injuries.

According to the latest report, Mother is out of the hospital. The child in the stroller is still beaing treated for non-life threatening injuries. The other child was OK. This is good news.

It was awful! I hope the mother and children (even though the boy may have not been hit, think about the emotional trauma he's now experiencing!) There was a white man laying on Fremont Blvd moments after I heard the crash. Was that the Nissan driver? I hope this is lesson to people to drive more carefully!

The mother is released from hospital and has minor injuries. It is a miracle that she only needed a few stitches and may need plastic surgery for nose later on. Could be so much worse. 1 year old girl is in ICU for observation tonight. 4 year old boy is pretty shaken up but not hit.

I saw that those two cars chased at about 80 miles/hour on Peralta blvd. toward Fremont blvd. They didn't slow down when they went near Fremont blvd.. It is a killer speed on such street. Both of them should be charged. I hope the baby and mother are ok.
