This Week: Spring Break Means Open Swim, Fitness for Moms, Police Commander Retires

Here are five things you need to know in and around Newark through April 8.

  1. Most Newark schools are closed this week as part of Spring Break vacation. And to keep the kids and teens busy, the City of Newark will have open hours for recreation swim. The hours for recreation swim will be from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. every day from Monday through Friday.
  2. Moms of young babies who are looking to get some exercise can join Stroller Strides Fremont-Milpitas, a fitness program held at NewPark Mall. And the first class is FREE. The next class will be held at 9 a.m. today, but if you miss it, there’s another one scheduled for Wednesday and Friday. Click here for more information about the one-hour class.
  3. Calling all small business owners! Tomorrow Newark Patch will hold its first free business workshop known as the Newark Patch Main Street Meet Up. Attendees will learn more about how to use social media and Newark Patch as tools to promote their businesses. And there will be a free complimentary breakfast.   4. Newark Police Commander Robert Douglas will be honored at Newark City Council’s Thursday meeting. Douglas confirmed with Patch on March 28 that . Det. Sgt. Mike Carroll will be promoted to take on Douglas’ post, he added.
  5. Renowned magician James Randi will be a guest speaker at Ohlone Community College’s Fremont campus on Friday the 13th. As part of his speech, Randi will talk about paranormal activities and pseudoscience. The talk begins at 7 p.m. for more information.
