This Week: City Council To Hear Updates From Evergreen Oil; Avanzando Hosts Social and Fundraiser

Here are five things you need to know in and around Newark through Feb. 26.

  1. Today is President’s Day and that means the City of Newark offices are closed in observation of this holiday. Schools with the Newark Unified School District are also closed today. Post offices are also closed. Regular hours for City Hall, schools and the post office resume on Tuesday. The NewPark Mall will be open regular hours Monday.
  2. The Newark Unified Board of Education will hear a presentation about the district’s certificated layoff process at its Tuesday meeting begins at 7 p.m. Certified staff members whom the district plan to layoff must be notified by March 15, and final layoffs must be completed by May 15.   3. City council members will hear an update on the repairs made at Evergreen Oil Refinery. The presentation was a request made by Vice Mayor Ana Apodaca, according to the council’s agenda. Last March, a two-alarm fire erupted at Evergreen Oil, injuring one employee and shutting down its entire refinery portion.
  4. The two men arrested and charged with murder for the death a Pleasanton man killed in a fatal accident in January return to court this week. Deshon Collier and Jabrie Watts, both 20, are expected to enter a plea at 9 a.m. on Friday at the Fremont Hall of Justice.
  5. Avanzando will be hosting a Social for Kids’ Success fundraising event Friday evening. Learn more about the nonprofit organization that aims to empower Latino youth and their families during this event that begins at 5:30 p.m. Entertainment will be provided and Pozole will be served. Donations of $20 are encouraged and RSVPs are required. RSVP at avanzando.newark@gmail.com.
