This Week: Circus and Citywide Garage Sale

A quick look at selected happenings around town

Monday, June 11:

  • Artists Showcase. A local artists showcase featuring landscapes and still life art continues through June 30 at NewPark Mall. Among artists represented are Farshid Namei, Robyn Lyee Leimer, Jaci Daskarolis, and Carol Ramos. The exhibits are in the mall’s Cultural Corner on the lower level near Sear’s. Hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.   For details, .

Tuesday, June 12:

  • Planning Commission. The Newark Planning Commission will meet at 7:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at the City Administration Building, 37101 Newark Blvd. Among items on the agenda: a public hearing to consider a request  by League of Volunteers a conditional use permit for a circus to be held Sept. 13-17 at NewPark Mall. Wednesday, June 13:

  • Ukulele. Volunteer ukulele instructor will teach a free class on how to play the instrument at 1 p.m. at the Newark Senior Center, 7401 Enterprise Dr.  For details, call 510-578-4840 or send an email to senior.­center@­newark.­org.

Thursday, June 14:

  • City Council. The Newark City Council will meet in the City Administration Building, 37101 Newark Blvd.  Among items on the agenda: a public hearing to consider a use permit for a children’s day care facility at 39768 Cedar Blvd. The meeting will be televised live over local cable channel 26. Friday, June 15:

  • Memory box. Family and friends of Osani Futi, plan a Memory Box Burial in his memory at 2 p.m. at Chapel of the Chimes, 32992 Mission Blvd., Hayward. The 18-year-old Newark resident died in late April after he was in Fremont.  An 18-year-old man has been in connection to Futi's killing. The community is invited to attend the Memory Box Burial and those who are interested in contributing to the items being placed in the box is asked to contact Stacy Kelly at ladyleopard139@sbcglobal.net or 510-719-0333.

  • Circus. The American Crown Circus returns to Newark for four days. Sponsored by the League of Volunteers, the circus will be at Newark Junior High School, 6201 Lafayette Ave. Show times are 6 and 8 p.m. June 15-18, with an additional Sunday matinee at 4 p.m. June 17. Tickets are $16 general admission (ages 13 and older), which includes two free children's tickets for youth ages 12 and under. Advance tickets are $12 through June 14. Saturday, June 16:

  • Citywide Garage Sale. The City of Newark’s 10th annual Citywide Garage Sale is set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Last year, the event drew about 25 participants. This year, the participant turnout is expected to be approximately 100 households throughout the city. For details, call 510-624-5900 or click here.
