PG&E Pipeline Tests to Begin May 31

The gas and electric company sent additional letters out to its Newark customers this week.

Newark residents will soon see PG&E personnel testing pipelines near a main street in town.

PG&E plans to begin tests on about a one-mile stretch of a natural gas pipeline on May 31. The tests are anticipated to last for one week.

The pipeline, which is 24 inches in diameter, runs from Cedar Boulevard at Lafayette Avenue through Blackburn Drive to Cardiff Street and Jarvis Avenue.

PG&E held to meet with Newark customers and tell them how the hydrostatic pressure tests will work.

At those meetings, representatives said the project's purpose is to identify any weaknesses within the pipeline.

The tests in Newark is part of the company's efforts to test 150 miles of pipelines that are similar in characteristics and age to  last September. Hydrostatic pressure testing has been used by natural gas transmission industries for more than 30 years, according to PG&E.

Service is not expected to be disrupted during the tests, PG&E staff said.
