Need to Know: Summer Begins, Circus Comes to Town, Citywide Garage Sale

Enjoy the summer sun, watch acrobatic tricks and find some treasures at a yard sale.

Here are five things you need to know in and around Newark through June 19.

  1. School is officially out for summer. Newark Unified School District ended classes last Thursday, June 9, and Newark Memorial High School seniors celebrated their on Saturday, June 11.
  2. begins its today, June 13. The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and has the option of extended care from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. instead. The summer camp is available for children in grades K-8 and features activities from musical theater and dance to sports and video creation and more.   3. Even though school is out, the Newark Unified School District's Board of Education is staying busy, with two potential meetings this week. The board's regular meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 14, at 7:30 p.m. Board President Charlie Mensinger said the board will on Saturday, June 18.
  4. The circus will be back in town for shows on three days this week, thanks to the Tri-City League of Volunteers. The American Crown Circus will present circus acts acts including clowns, jugglers, high-wire acrobatics and trapeze artists. The shows are scheduled for 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Friday, June 17, and Saturday, June 18; and 4 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 19.
  5. Garage sale shoppers, rejoice! The ninth annual Newark Citywide Garage Sale will be held on Saturday, June 18, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Also, Kruzin for the Cure, a Newark Relay for Life team, is holding its second annual from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 6620 Mayhews Landing Rd. All proceeds from the team’s sale will go to the American Cancer Society.
