Need to Know: Memorial Wall, Movie Night, Back-to-School Shopping

Here are five things you need to know in and around Newark through August 14.

  1. The Newark Unified School Board of Education will hold another special meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9. The board will hear one more presentation regarding the recommendation of a and is scheduled to vote on whether to move forward with placing the bond measure on the November ballot.
  2. Also on Tuesday, Aug. 9, Newark’s Planning Commission meets for a study session on the , which provides a framework for the plans to redevelop about 205 acres of land.
  3. Tri-City residents will have a chance to honor fallen soldiers this week with the arrival of , a downsized replica of the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. The wall will be on display from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Aug. 10-13 at DeVry University, 6000 Dumbarton Circle, Fremont.
  4. Get out your swim gear for Friday’s at the . Individuals who pay $1 more than regular admission for the event will have the opportunity to watch Toy Story 3 while splashing around in the community pool.
  5. Saturday marks the long awaiting Shop ‘Til You Rock event, a back-to-school, music-inspired mall tour. Teens will be invited to participate in various stations — including a Just Dance 2 station, one where you can  design your own airbrushed apparel and more — and watch Thomas Fiss perform at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. at the .
