Here are five things you need to know in and around Newark through August 7.

  1. Tuesday night, neighborhoods around Newark will join thousands nationwide in celebration of National Night Out, an event that promotes prevention of crime by neighbors uniting to deliver the message that crime will not be tolerated.   2. The Newark Unified School Board of Education will meet in a special board meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday night. Among the items on the agenda are the employment contract of the district’s new chief business official and a workshop on a general obligation bond.
  3. Newark Library may look a little different to visitors on Thursday. The will be there, free for children and their families, with games, prizes and face painting. The Newark Library League makes funding for this event possible.
  4. Foodies will rejoice again on Friday when the rolls back into town. Dinner will be served again from numerous trucks between 4:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. at the parking lot between Macys and Sears.
  5. Wine and art will return to the Tri-City area this weekend for the 28th Annual Fremont Festival of the Arts. A wine garden, vendors, live music and a children's center will provide entertainment for everyone in the family. The festival is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free. for more details.
