Need to Know: Election Season Begins, Cardboard Boat Races, Holy Ghost Festa

Here are five things you need to know in and around Newark through July 24.

  1. Monday marks the start of the candidate filing period for individuals who are running for either Newark’s mayoral seat or one of the two council seats up for election this November. Learn more about the start of this year’s election season by clicking here.
  2. It’s been open since July 5 but this week, the community will be celebrating the grand re-opening of the . The celebration will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 19 at the center, 7401 Enterprise Dr.
  3. Looking to develop your business and network with other professionals? Join the Newark Chamber of Commerce at Wednesday’s Lead for Success meeting. The meeting begins at noon on June 20 at , 5687 Jarvis Ave.
  4. The Newark Holy Ghost 89th Annual Festa commences Thursday, June 21. The four-day celebration, which is a tradition tracing back to Portugal, includes numerous religious ceremonies and the presentation of queens. A parade will be held Sunday, June 24.
  5. The City of Newark’s recreation department is hosting a different kind of race this week: cardboard boat races. The races, which are open to people of all ages, will begin at noon on Friday, June 22, at the .
