Need to Know: Book Launch, Public Hearing for New Neighborhood, Second Music at the Grove

Here are five things you need to know in and around Newark through July 31.

  1. The American Red Cross is looking for blood donors, and if you give up a pint, you’ll get a pint – of ice cream, that is. From now through Aug. 31, people who donate blood with the Red Cross, including at Newark’s center, will receive a coupon good for a pint of Baskin-Robbins. to learn more.
  2. Local author Eve Evangelista is hosting an of her novel Rise of the Sea-Landers. The Philippines native, who grew up in Newark, is celebrating the launch with a to be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26, at the .
  3. A meetings will be held this week about the Dumbarton Transit-Oriented Development, a proposal to build a new neighborhood that would include housing, retail stores and businesses in west Newark. The planning commission will host a workshop at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 26. The public hearing that was scheduled for Friday, July 29 has been canceled.
  4. The City Council meets Thursday, July 28, and among the items on the council’s agenda is the authorization for the police chief to sign an agreement with All City Management Services that will provide school crossing guard services. For the full agenda, click here.
  5. The second of three free summer music concerts will be held Sunday, July 31. The Cheeseballs will provide live entertainment at beginning at 1:30 pm. Sunday at Shirley Sisk Grove.
