Lane Closures at Niles Canyon to Begin May 26

Construction to improve highway safety on State Route 84 brings on-again, off-again lane closures.

Caltrans plans to enforce lane closures periodically—starting this weekend—as they do pre-construction work on State Route 84 in Niles Canyon.

There will be one-way traffic control north and south of the Rosewarnes Underpass.

Construction is scheduled from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on May 26 and will continue on May 31 through June 2 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. and June 3 from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Commuters should expect a delay in travel time. The California Highway Patrol will be charged with traffic enforcement during the road work.

The construction is part of the Niles Canyon I Safety Improvement Project. The project aims to add shoulders and realign areas of the highway and widen the road between the Rosewarnes and Farwell underpasses.

Tree removals for this phase of the project began in late February. The anticipated end date for construction for the project's first phase is December, 2013.

Caltrans urges motorists to drive carefully through the construction zone. For more information on Caltrans, visit the website here.
