Local Sears and Kmart Stores Spared — For Now

Sears announces 80 of its 100-120 store closings. Newark is not on that list.

Sears Holdings will shut down at least 80 Kmart and Sears stores but so far three local facilities have been spared.

Newark is home to a two-story department store, located at while Hayward is home to a Sears department store at Southland Mall and a Kmart store off Mission Boulevard.

The planned closures were initially reported in an internal memo from CEO Lou D'Ambrosio that was picked up by the media.

Initially, there was no list of specific stores.

Now Sears Holdings Newsroom has published a list that the company says "represents 80 of the 100 to 120 store closings that were announced (on) December 27.

Three California stores, all of which are located in Southern California, will immediately be impacted by the closures, according to the a list of affected stores that is posted with this story as a PDF.

Sears Holdings said it will post updates. So more closures may be announced before the local stores are in the clear.

Sears said its stores typically have between 40 and 80 employees.
