Alameda County Cars Make Top 20 Greenest List

Alameda County’s collection of cars is the 17th greenest fleet of vehicles in North America, announced Green Fleet Magazine.

The magazine’s award assessed municipal, state, and federal government car collections and judged how green they were based on fuel consumption, emissions standards, and utilization. It also judged whether the way the cars were used is sustainable or not.

This year’s Government Green Fleet Award Winners include the City of Sacramento, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and the Village of Downers Grove in Illinois. Alameda County came in 17th place.

California did rather well on the rankings list, possessing 12 of the top 40 green fleets in North America, according to Green Fleet Magazine.

The county owns hundreds of cars, 175 of which are hybrid gas and electric cars.

Alternative-fuel vehicles and green practices have been essential components of the County’s transportation program for many years, said Aki Nakao, director of Alameda County General Services Agency,

Nakan said this fleet has saved more than $200,000 a year in fuel costs.
