Art is Education at the Newark Library

Brian Edwards is the branch manager for Newark Library. Learn how to join the Newark Library in March for "Art is Education."

The Alameda County Library has teamed up with Alameda County Office of Education and the Alameda County Arts Commission to provide a series of free programs at our libraries during the month of March.

The theme this year for Art is Education is "Creating a Better Future Together."

Please come stop by for a program, check out a book, or get a free museum pass online (library card required for museum passes). If you have ideas for programs that you would like to see at your library, send me an email, or stop by and let us know!

Friday, March 16, 10:45 a.m. - 11:15 a.m.: Toddler Art Workshop

Join us for a fun art project designed for children ages 2 - 4 years. Parents will need to accompany their children, and please wear clothing that can get dirty in case we make a mess.

Saturday, March 17, 1 - 1:45 pm: Nurturing Your Child’s Art

This workshop, specifically for parents, provides an opportunity to learn from Shui Kwan Chandrasekaran the ways you can value your children’s artistic expressions to encourage their creativity.

Saturday, March 17, 3 - 3:45 p.m.: Physics Is All Around You

This workshop is for 3- to 6-year-olds and involves movement, counting and color in explaining physics to young children. This workshop is limited to 25 children and 25 parents or caregivers. Please arrive on time, as we want you to get all you can out of your time with Dr. G, also known as Dr. Gunjan Chakravarty. Saturday, March 24, 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Updos: Hair as Art: Learn hair styling techniques for special events and everyday fashion with licensed cosmetologist Rachel Hamill. Saturday, March 24, 3 - 4 p.m.: Community Collage Quilt Workshop

Join teaching artist Marion Coleman as we use colorful recycled paper materials to create a community collage quilt on the theme of “Creating A Better Future Together.” The finished paper quilt will be displayed in the library. All ages welcome and all materials are provided.

Saturday, March 24, 3 - 3:45 p.m.: Music Dan Concert

Enjoy singing old favorites and learn a few new songs, too! Dan brings along a guitar, mandolin, ukelele, and banjo for sing-along fun. Best for families with children ages 3 and older. No registration is necessary, just drop in to the Children's area.

Saturday, March 31, 2 - 3:30 pm Bollywood Music Live!

Local Indian music group JhankarLive performs Bollywood music, both fast-paced and soft and melodious. The Jhankaris, a group of passionate music enthusiasts, have performed for charitable causes and supported education and development of artistic talent for poor children since 2006.
