Update: Mother, 5-Year-Old Struck By SUV While Riding Bikes

A citizen pulled the boy from under the vehicle and provided life-saving first aid.

A 5-year-old boy was seriously injured and his mother hospitalized after being struck by an SUV while riding bicycles Wednesday night.

According to Sgt. Manuel DeSerpa, police responded to the accident at the intersection of Newark Boulevard and Ruschin Drive at 8:07 p.m.

The mother, child and father were in the crosswalk when a white Acura SUV travelling northbound on Newark Boulevard struck two of the three bicyclists.

The mother sustained moderate injuries but the child was critically injured, police said.

A citizen pulled the boy from under the vehicle and provided first aid, which saved the child's life, DeSerpa said.

Both were transported to a local trauma center.

The driver, a 72-year-old woman, is cooperating with the investigation and alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in the accident, DeSerpa said.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call the Newark Police Department at 510-578-4237. Anonymous tips can be left at 510-578-4965.
