What's the Buzz on Newark Days 2011?

Newark Days attendees can expect fantasies come true and visits from the military this year — plus the tried-and-true favorites of rides, food and a parade.

The carnival for this year’s Newark Days is being set up and prepared for four days of screaming riders, adrenaline rushes and the overall enthusiasm that visitors bring to this event every year.

Newark is celebrating 56 years as an incorporated city this year and, as Newark League of Volunteers Executive Director Shirley Sisk sayss, there are definitely new things to look forward to.

This year’s theme is “Fantasy Comes Alive!”

The theme will be incorporated into the usual festivities in several ways, including a show that features familiar fairy tale characters.

Next to the fantasy stage is an arts and crafts area where kids can create objects from the fantasy world, such as wands and autograph books.

Kids can use the books to collect signatures from the fairy tale characters and stamps from five stations on the grounds. Collect all five, and you can be entered in a drawing for a family pass to the Oakland Zoo.

It’s not just sweet spots from the world of fantasy that are new this year. On Sunday, military personnel will make an appearance in recognition of the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

Newark Days will still have its carnival, 21 food booths and a parade that begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

For visitors who have never attended Newark Days before, Sisk suggests, “Be prepared to have fun and try and get around to everything so they can enjoy all aspects of it.”

Newark Days takes place Sept. 15-18 at the on Cedar Boulevard.
