Five Things to Do This Weekend

It must be February, because the weekend line-up includes a Black History Month event, a Valentine's Day tea and a Chinese New Year dinner.

  1. "African Americans and The Civil War" is the theme of the at the Newark Community Center. Civil War scholar Samuel Rutland will deliver the keynote address. The program also will feature a health and wellness seminar, live music, job and college information, and a soul food station.
  2. The  at Mayflower Seafood Restaurant is Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. A 10-course dinner and dessert will be served. Entertainment includes a Lion Dance, silent auction, raffles and prizes. Proceeds will benefit the Magnolia Women's Recovery Program, Centro de Servicios and the Rotary Club Foundation. $50 per person.
  3. Support school music programs in Newark by attending a pancake breakfast fundraiser, 7-11 a.m. Saturday at the , 38801 Blacow Rd. The Newark Symphonic Winds will be playing, as well as the school bands from and . Proceeds from the event, hosted by the Newark Band Boosters, will support the music programs at both schools. Tickets are $6.50 in advance and $8 at the door. Everyone is welcome.
  4. Sit down for for a traditional tea with friends Saturday and Sunday. Tyme for Tea & Co., 37501 Niles Blvd., will offer a “Cupid’s Touch” tea this weekend with a menu that includes scones, pinwheel sandwiches, desserts and more. The cost is $32 per person (includes tax and gratuity). Tea times are 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. both days.
  5. Celebrate Valentine’s Day early at the , 6334 San Pablo Ave., Oakland. At 6 p.m. Saturday, musician Steffy Sue will start the night off with a Valentine’s craft workshop. A concert by Sue and Emily Zisman follows from 7 to 10 p.m.
