Silliman Aquatic Center Re-Opens

The Silliman Family Aquatic Center will celebrated its grand re-opening Friday. The celebration included a variety of activities including a “splash-in” movie. The indoor aquatic park closed for repairs just after Labor Day weekend last year. Repairs included the removal of peeling paint and galvanized surfaces. But with the new upgrades comes a slight bump in youth and senior drop-in rates. 

Suspect Shot in Police Standoff Remains in Hospital

A Newark man who was critically wounded after being shot during a police standoff last Friday evening remained hospitalized Thursday. Though his current condition was not immediately known, Cmdr. Mike Carroll of the Newark Police Department told Patch that the suspect “has a long road to recovery.” Due to the suspect’s condition, he has not been arrested and no charges have been filed against him, Carroll said. His name is not yet being released.   

Islamophobia Still Plagues Muslims Living in Bay Area

The quarter-million Muslims live in the San Francisco Bay Area face ongoing, entrenched Islamophobia more than a decade after 9/11, according to a new study. “The Bay Area Muslim Study: Establishing Community and Identity”  found 40 percent of Muslims in the region have experienced personal discrimination and 23 percent have been victims of a hate crime. The discrimination against Muslims was particularly pronounced in school-aged children, the study found. See the full story here.
