Week in Review: Police Shoot Armed Suspect; Newark Patch Gets a New Look

Police Shoot Armed Man After Standoff on McDonald Avenue

A man was critically wounded after being shot in an exchange of gunfire that erupted after an hour-long standoff Friday night. Officers responded to the 5500 block of McDonald Avenue at about 5:40 p.m. after receiving a call from a concerned person about a mentally depressed relative in possession of several firearms, police said. The caller also mentioned that the relative had been making
suicidal threats.

Officers responded and attempted to negotiate with the suspect. After 45 minutes, an armored vehicle arrived. That's when the man came out and fired shots at the officers. Officers shot back and hit him at least once before he retreated back into the home. Read the full story here.

Teen Makes Fake Kidnapping Report To Get Back At Boyfriend

A 15-year-old girl falsely reported a kidnapping on Tuesday in an effort to get back at her boyfriend, according to Newark police. The kidnapping report was made around 8 p.m. on Tuesday, when a 15-year-old girl told police she had been grabbed and tied up by two males in the area of Thornton Avenue and the railroad tracks. The girl told investigators that she had freed herself by rubbing her restraints against a rock. After speaking to investigators the girl admitted the story was false, saying that she had made it up in an effort to make her boyfriend feel bad about not taking her out for ice cream.
