Ohlone Students Show Off Style, Language Skills on ‘Top Model’ Runway

Spanish teacher Deborah Lemon and her students present the third annual "Ohlone Newark's Next Top Spanish 101B Model" fashion show Wednesday.

Spanish students at Ohlone College staged a fashion show Wednesday at the in order to bring textbook teaching to life, according to Ohlone teacher Deborah Lemon.

Lemon says this is the third year that she and Vicki Curtis, an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher, have collaborated on a show inspired by “America’s Next Top Model.”

Lemon says the runway event challenges their students’ language skills in a fun, entertaining way.

Before the show, students in Lemon’s second semester Spanish class record voice threads that describe what they are wearing in Spanish. Next, Curtis has her ESL students judge the student models and listen to the runway descriptions in English.

The student models walked down the runway in their favorite styles ranging from Hawaiian beachwear to 80s rocker glam.

At the end of the show, students voted Ali Bush, Rachael Allen and Brandon Troche as the winners for their runway apparel inspired by an Indian party.

Newark Patch has posted more snapshots from Wednesday’s fashion show.
