5 Things You Need to Know This Week: May 16-21

Go to a sock hop, buy fresh fruit and attend a concert.

  1.   is hosting a 1950s-themed sock hop for seniors on Tuesday, May 17. From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., seniors can gather in the gym to dance to the Canyon Band with swing dance instructor Mike Quebec and his partner. Free treats will be served during intermission. The cost is $5 at the door.
  2. Head over to Union City for the at Kaiser Permanente Medical Offices, 3553 Whipple Rd., on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Farm-fresh fruits, nuts, greens, vegetables and fresh-cut flowers are available.
  3. Ohlone College will present a community band concert Wednesday, from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Ohlone College’s Smith Center, 43600 Mission Blvd. The band and the tuba ensemble will perform songs from the Beatles, Queen, Lady Gaga and more. Tickets are $5 to $10 and parking is an additional $2. 
  4. Also on Wednesday, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., boys in first through fourth grade are invited to attend the at, 35660 Cedar Blvd. Boys in kindergarten are also welcome to attend, but they cannot officially join until June. 
  5. The American Red Cross will hold a at Kaiser Permanente, 3555 Whipple Rd., Union City on Friday, May 20, from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The drive is open to the public and will be held in conference rooms B1-A and B1-B. Call ahead or go online to schedule an appointment. redcrossblood.org
