Ohlone College Forty-Seventh Annual Graduation Ceremony

Ohlone College Graduation 2014 is upon us. The number of graduates has grown to 675 – that’s 146 more graduates than last year. And, because many students complete credits for more than one Associate’s degree, the College will award a total of 747 degrees for the 2013-2014 academic year. In addition, the College anticipates awarding an additional 112 AA/AS degrees by the end the of summer term.

Some truly exceptional students will be graduating this year. Representative of this is 2014 Valedictorian, Zaw Phyo, who will take the stage to speak about his outstanding academic experiences at Ohlone. Zaw has a 4.0 GPA in over 100 credit hours in his major, Natural Science, with an emphasis in Physical Science. He was named outstanding Chemistry Student by his chemistry professor, Dr. Maru Grant, who praised him for his hard work and dedication. Zaw is the youngest of three children, all of whom are Ohlone College graduates.

Zaw plans to attend UC San Diego to major in Molecular Biology, following his own advice to other students, which is, “It’s important not to be scared to dive into new challenges and environments.” When asked, Zaw said that what he liked best about Ohlone College was the “open and friendly environment that fosters learning” and “the diverse group of students.”

Also speaking at graduation is Romeo Marquez Jr., an Ohlone alum, and now a faculty member. Romeo is a graduate of UCLA’s school of Theatre, Film and TV, an accomplished author, and a highly sought after motivational speaker. He teaches acting in Ohlone’s Theatre Department, where his power to motivate and involve students is readily apparent.
