The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service opens public comment session for draft 15-year plan for Don Edwards San Francisco Bay Wildlife Refuge
The following is a press release issued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service: FREMONT, CA – The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service published a draft Comprehensive Conservation Plan for the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge in the Federal Register Wednesday, May 16, 2012. The draft 15-year plan proposes several changes for the refuge, including: A 45-day public comment period on the draft plan will extend until July 2, 2012. Newark Vice Mayor Ana Apodaca is one of eight candidates contending to fill a vacant seat on the Alameda County Board of Supervisors as a result of former supervisor Nadia Lockyer resignation that came after months of scandals, media reports say. The Oakland Tribune reported that Lockyer’s predecessor Gail Steele is also among those applicants. The other hopefuls include Union City Mayor Mark Green and former Union City Councilman Richard Valle. Both candidates from Union City are in races for other political roles. Green is currently running for State Assembly, while Valle has been campaigning to be Union City’s next mayor. The Alameda County Board of Supervisors will be reviewing the candidates’ applications in the following weeks. …

The following is a report by the City of Newark originally published in the city's Spring 2012 Newsletter: As part of the City of Newark’s ongoing effort to protect and extend the life of its streets, the Public Works Department annually inspects asphalt concrete pavement surfaces to identify areas of potential maintenance and determine the timing and type of appropriate repairs. The types of preventative maintenance performed on our streets include crack filling, patch paving, and cape seal and slurry seal resurfacing. For those streets in a more deteriorated state, a pavement overlay or even costly reconstruction may be necessary. Alameda County residents are being encouraged to take advantage of program that could cut certain overdue traffic ticket fines in half
The following is a press release issued by Alameda County Auditor-Controller Patrick O'Connell: Alameda County residents with overdue traffic tickets have less than two months left to pay up through an amnesty program that allows some fines to be cut in half. Since Jan. 1, 2012 courts in Alameda County and elsewhere throughout California have offered amnesty to people who have not paid traffic-ticket fines due before January 1, 2009. The amnesty program allows people to make good on their debt and shaves 50 percent off the amount due. The amnesty program ends June 30, 2012. Only traffic tickets that were due to be paid before January 1, 2009, are eligible. Parking tickets, driving under the influence (DUI), and reckless driving cases …

The bill, AB 1581, requires floral retailers who use local phone numbers or local names to include their address and notice of their place of business in their advertisements. Florence LaRiviere is being honored for her work in establishing the nation's first urban wildlife refuge.
A long-time Palo Alto resident has won the Wetland Community Leader of the Year Award from the Environmental Law Institute for her work with the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Florence LaRiviere began organizing concerned citizens to establish the first urban wildlife refuge in the country in 1972, according to an announcement from Palo Alto-based Citizens Committee to Complete the Refuge. The Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1974, spans 30,000 acres of open bay, salt pond, salt marsh, mudflat, upland and vernal pool habitats, and is home to more than 280 species of birds who migrate along the Pacific Flyway. Abraham Ibrahim Hade, 18, of Fremont faces one count of murder with a gang enhancement clause in connection to the killing of Newark student Osana Futi.
Dressed in a yellow jumpsuit, 18-year-old Abraham Ibrahim Hade, who is suspected of killing a Newark student, stayed silent as his plea entry was delayed. Hade, a Fremont resident, is facing one count of murder with deadly weapon and gang enhancements in connection to the stabbing death of Osana Futi, an 18-year-old Newark Memorial High School senior. As Futi’s surrogate mother, along with about a dozen relatives and friends, sat in the courtroom, defense attorney Thomas Knutsen requested that Hade’s plea entry be pushed back to May 10, a request Superior Court Judge Dennis J.
