Week in Review: Federal Officer Shot; Hattie James Turns 100; School Board OKs Drug-Sniffing Dogs
Police are continuing their investigation into a shooting that critically injured a federal officer Tuesday morning and led to the arrest of a 61-year-old Piedmont man. Police documents show the suspect, Dennis Bagwell, may have had an attraction toward the victim’s wife, whom he had taught at the Bay Area Optical School in Union City. Bagwell is expected to enter a plea on charges of attempted murder and assault with a firearm later this month.
A man who has listed addresses in Newark and Redwood City has been identified by the FBI as a wanted fugitive. The man is identified as Joey Earl Williams, 48. Williams is one of six fugitives wanted in connection to a drug trafficking and gang activity.
On Tuesday, the Newark Pavilion celebrated the 100th birthday of Hattie James. James, a Fremont resident, shared her favorite memories with Patch while she enjoyed her birthday with her family during Newark Pavilion’s Bingo night – an event James has frequented for 15 years.

Drug-sniffing dogs are now allowed on Newark Unified School District property during contraband searches. The Newark Unified School Board of Education approved a board policy change that permits specially trained, non-aggressive dogs to “sniff the air around lockers, desks, or vehicles on district property or at district-sponsored events” in order to alert staff of any presence of substances prohibited by law or Board policy. The policy became effective immediately.
