Viola Blythe Needs Help To Gather Toys For Kids

Donations will be accepted through Dec. 22.

Santa's workshop has found its way to Newark's Viola Blythe Community Service Center, but these elves need help.

The annual Viola Blythe Toy Drive is under way and Viola Blythe Program Director Debbie Cavalho said she expects that the toy drive will be short by 600-700 donations because of the closure of Toys 'R' Us in Newark.

"We need toys badly," she said. "We're really hurting on toys."

Viola Blythe toy drives normally provide gifts to approximately 300 children each year, Cavalho said. She added that even giftcards help, particularly for children between the ages of 11 and 14.

See the map above or the list below to find out where you can drop off donations in Newark:

Donations will be accepted through Dec. 22. For more information of Viola Blythe, visit http://www.violablythe.org or call 510-794-3437.

These are very tough economic times for many of Newarks children. Please help by donating a new toy. It's so easy to do. Just drop a toy in one of the barrels located near the entrance of one of the many businesses listed or send a gift card to the Viola Blythe Center. Also, look into the "Adopt a family or low income senior for Christmas" program. It's easy too. Just buy enough food to last the family you have chosen to last a few days, and purchase a gift for each member of the family. Help those in need any way you can, And please remember that those in need aren't hungry only during the holidays. It's a year round problem.
