A Fremont man was arrested after a series of crimes were reported Friday afternoon.

A knife-wielding man was arrested after he tried crawling away with an injured ankle from a man chasing him for stealing his girlfriend's credit card, police said Monday.

Jeffrey W. Caton, 38, of Fremont was arrested after police identified him as the suspect in a series of criminal acts Friday afternoon, police said in a statement.

Police first identified Caton around 1:48 p.m., approximately 45 minutes after a robbery had occurred at Home Depot off Thornton Avenue. While investigating, officers said they learned Caton waved a knife while threatening security personnel when they tried to capture him for stealing equipment.

Approximately an hour later, police responded to Work World at NewPark Mall where employees reported their credit cards and debit cards and an iPod had been stolen from the backroom and learned the suspect’s description matched Caton’s.

At about 4 p.m., a Work World employee learned her credit card that was stolen earlier was being used at Twilight Zone Gift and Smoke Shop on the 5900 block of Mowry Avenue.

Police said the woman's boyfriend went to the shop and saw Caton nearby. Once he saw the boyfriend, Caton ran toward Cedar Boulevard and the manfollowed. Caton threatened the man with a knife.

Caton climbed a concrete wall, with the man following, and he injured his right foot, police said. Then, he attempted to crawl away and continued to flash the knife at the man.

Police found Caton in a back yard of a home on the 6200 block of Quartz Place. He was taken to a local hospital and then was arrested on suspicion of second-degree robbery, exhibiting a deadly weapon and theft.

He was booked into Santa Rita Jail and is scheduled to appear at the Fremont Hall of Justice for an arraignment at 2 p.m.

Mona,

I got a Brother who learned a lot from being Incarcerated. For one, he can pick any Lock including Dead Bolts and Safes. Every time he goes back into Santa Rita, he comes back out with Knowledge of some new trick. He even knows how to get out of his Cuffs, that one I never understood since his Wrists aren't that skinny. If he wasn't such a Junkie I bet he would be making $$$ as a Magician or something.

But oh well, we all choose our paths.

Hooray for her! But the other downside is the tax payers will probably have to pick up the bill for his medical expenses as well as prosecuting him. Hmmmmmmm. I wonder if he will be able to smoke a medical joint in the joint,...er, jail?

I hate to bust all of your bubbles.. but it wasn't a girl.. it was my son that chased him.. 'cause the guy stole his gf's credit card from his bag at Work World. His gf found out where he had used the card and my son was off and after him! I've been waiting all weekend to see this story.. hehe

Great son; he's a brave man to face a psychopath with a knife.

Want to know why were seeing so many sociopaths using knives instead of firearms these days? It seems they've noticed the sentence enhancements for firearms, and noted that plea bargains and reduced charges are more likely if they use knives instead. They've also noticed that juries who tend to watch too much television, don't seem to consider knives serious weapons. Note that the Newark high school student murdered over a year ago was stabbed to death. Note that it seems knife wounds actually tend to be more serious than most shootings. Note that juries need to be educated in the realities of the damage done by edged weapons, and so do DAs and police.

It wasn't a woman that chased him down... It was my friends son! Get your facts right before posting them.
