Man Killed in Fatal Collision Identified

A Coroner's Office official said the man was a Pleasanton resident but media report states he was most recently living in Fremont.

Newark — The victim of a that happened as three burglary suspects were attempting to flee from a police officer Wednesday morning has been identified.

The man was identified as Robert Cheney, 69, according to an official with the Alameda County Coroner’s Office. The Coroner's Office said Cheney lived in Pleasanton, but a report from The Argus states that authories said Cheney most recently lived in Fremont.

Cheney was killed after his two-door Honda was hit at the intersection of Cherry Street and Mowry Avenue by a Chevy Malibu traveling westbound on Mowry Avenue, according to police.

The Honda was pushed up onto the sidewalk and into a bush in front of and the Chevy Malibu rolled over on impact and overturned into the parking lot of the fire station, police said Wednesday.

Cheney was prounced dead at the scene. One of the occupants of the Chevy Malibu, now identified as Rajwaun Watkins, 20, of Oakland and Hayward, suffered head injuries, police said.

An official with the Eden Medical Center confirmed Thursday morning that Watkins .

Police detained the two other occupants, who are believed to be connected to a home burglary that occurred shortly before the accident, according to Cmdr. Bob Douglas of the Newark Police Department.

Jabrie Watts and Deshon Collier, both 20, were captured after an attempt to flee the scene. Watts is listed to have residences in Oakland and Hayward and Collier has listed residences in San Leandro, Union City and Hayward.

Online court documents show that only Watts has been booked into Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of violation of parole.

Police did state in a press release that the suspects are to be arrested on  "various felony crimes." All three suspects are said to have "an extensive criminal history," according to a press release.

Douglas stated Wednesday afternoon that the incident is still under investigation and that they are building a case that would be forwarded to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.
